ABET’s HISTORY
All Beaches Experimental Theatre (ABET) was founded by the visionary Carson Merry Baillie and three of her drama workshop graduates, originally under the name Atlantic Beach Experimental Theatre. Their goal was to bring original works, daring new plays, and underrepresented musicals to the Jacksonville area — productions that challenged both artists and audiences.
For the first 13 years, Carson led ABET with passion, skill, and a deep commitment to artistic excellence. Under her guidance, the theatre quickly gained a reputation for high-quality productions, including regional premieres of Broadway plays, revivals of beloved classics, and original works — several by talented local playwrights.
Following her tenure, Barbara Evans served as Managing Artistic Director for two years, continuing ABET’s tradition of bold and inclusive programming.
In 2007, Celia Frank assumed the role, guiding the company through a dynamic period of growth until her retirement in June 2021, including moving ABET from its original home in Atlantic Beach to a venue in Neptune Beach and updating its name to All Beaches Experimental Theatre to reflect its broader reach and community focus.
Jacksonville theatre leader Lee Hamby then took the helm, infusing ABET with new energy and creative direction and great success until his departure in the Fall of 2024.
In 2025, ABET welcomed Raines Carr as Managing Artistic Director. A respected theatre maker, educator, and advocate for accessible performance, Raines brings a fresh artistic vision to the organization. Under his leadership, ABET continues to deepen its commitment to diverse storytelling, community engagement, and innovative, actor-driven work. His direction honors the theatre’s rich history while positioning it for a bold and sustainable future.
