ABOUT THE SHOW:
When former lovers are cast opposite each other in a swoony 1930s melodrama, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur — with hilarious and heartfelt consequences.
ABET presents Stage Kiss, a witty, whimsical, and slyly subversive romantic comedy from one of America’s most celebrated contemporary playwrights, Sarah Ruhl.
Known for her lyrical language, quirky humor, and emotional depth, Ruhl is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, a Tony Award nominee, and recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Grant. In Stage Kiss, she turns her sharp eye to the world of theatre itself, exploring what it means to pretend to be in love — and what happens when the pretending starts to feel real.
Smart, self-aware, and surprisingly moving, Stage Kiss is part backstage comedy, part love letter to the stage, and all heart. It’s a perfect piece for actors and audiences who love theatre — and love laughing at it.
With charm, chaos, and just the right touch of romance, ABET invites you to fall in love with Stage Kiss — where art imitates life, and maybe the other way around.

Statement from ABET

ABET recognizes the significant impact of Jacksonville University’s decision to close its theatre and music programs. We understand that this change affects not only students and faculty, but also the cultural vibrancy of our arts community.

As a long-standing theatre company deeply rooted in this region, ABET believes that creative spaces — and the people who bring them to life — should never be left behind. We are committed to ensuring that the rich legacy of performance and storytelling on this campus continues to thrive.

By partnering with Jacksonville University for this production, our goal is to honor the students, faculty, and spaces that have been central to the performing arts for decades. We want JU students to have meaningful opportunities to work alongside a community theatre company, gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of production — from acting and directing to design and stage management.

Our presence on campus is about more than producing a play; it’s about keeping the arts alive in a space that has inspired so many. Together with the university, we hope to nurture new collaborations, uplift young artists, and ensure that this stage continues to shine.
